I have to begin this post by saying that when choosing the title I had two absolute gems to choose from, and it was a really difficult decision to make, but I eventually went with 'From Yawn to Yarn' over 'From No-chet to Crochet'. Moving swiftly on...
I have always had a few creative bones in my body, but studying a science (aka method based) degree really doesn't give one all the opportunities in the world to express that. Usually this would call for a trip out with the binoculars and camera, but add rain, cold, snow, sleet, and every other wintery weather coupled with dark evenings into the mix, and you've scored yourself a night inside on the sofa. Well enough, I said, of screens and total and utter boredom, and after watching a YouTube tutorial, got to the haberdashery section of a shop in my hometown as fast as I could (try two days later...) and armed with three balls of yarn and a variety of hooks (I used 4mm for this project as I'm using double-knit), I set to work. And here, ladies and gentlemen, is my first piece of crochet...
So not too bad is what (I hope?) you're all thinking. What you don't know is that it was supposed to be a granny square which somehow turned out circular and basket-like. As I cut the yarn I felt a sense of both achievement at having made something that actually resembled crochet but also disappointment as I lamented 'what the heck can I use this for'. A flimsy, acrylic thing doesn't have all that many uses around the house it turns out, but I suddenly had the brainwave of the century and realised I hadn't got anywhere decent to put my yarn. As I placed the balls inside (ha ha yes...) I felt purposeful. The permanent space for my yarn was a sign that this was not the last time I would be hook in hand...
In fact, the next day I got up sooo early as the crocheting bug had already bitten and I was determined to finish what I set out to do; make a SQUARE. This time, after finding a third YouTube tutorial (where the guy demonstrating himself was complaining of how so many times he had experienced a similar problem to me) and using a slightly different method, my granny square dream was woven into a reality.
Though it wasn't my intention right at the start, I decided these colours would work well together as they reminded me of a Peacock Butterfly. I'm pretty happy with the look it's achieved, but low and behold, after a closer look yesterday, I discovered something tinged with sadness... IT'S NOT A SQUARE. It's pretty much impossible to tell this looking at it, much to my joy, but one of the sides is one set of double-crochets shorter. Nontheless, I shall be continuing with my endeavour until, hopefully, I have one mahoosive blanket. We'll see what happens. And, along with my new found hobby, have come family members commissioning me for their own wonky crochet pieces, so it looks like the hooks are set to be in my hand more than my paintbrush for a while at least.
Don't forget to let me know what you think, and thanks for reading!
Jess
